Horse body
- Base Vallejo Flat Earth 70983
- Middle Vallejo Green Brown 70879
- Highlight Vallejo Iraqi Sand 70819
Controlled wash of either
- Secret Weapon Miniatures Flesh Wash OR
- Secret Weapon Miniatures Dark Sepia
Plenty of details are not finished on this model, I just wanted to block in enough color in order to see how the horse would look. The washes obliterated a lot of shading, but on the flip side, made the details stand out really nicely. Dark Sepia is my favorite of the two variations at the moment, but I figured I needed to have some slight variety in skin tones.
Looks great! Excellent color choices.
ReplyDeleteI think your color palette is rubbing off on me. :)
DeleteVery nice. Now do an appaloosa.
ReplyDeleteLOL. I had to look that up. After painting cows that look like panda's helene forbade me from adding spots.
DeleteIt's really coming along John .. looking forward to see them at Nova this year 8) I picked up some Kreig awhile back and I still haven't tried to paint the horse yet haha..
ReplyDeleteEach model is just as intimidating as the previous! I waited for years to start my Krieg. I really hope you paint yours up so we can get the IG ball rolling online again. IG used to be huge.
DeleteYeah I know .. I was having a hell of a time even figuring out what color to even go with! .. After Nova this year I really want to mix it up. I need to take a break from my Eldar for a little bit at least haha..
DeleteYou have been Eldar focussed, but you've made a beautiful army. It is very distinctive. Anything tickling your fancy right now?
DeleteThanks 8) Yeah I wanted to up my Armies game painting wise so refreshed for this years Nova. I really want to finish up my Blood Angels, a Imperial Knight I've had sitting and the Death Corps.. I usually end up getting side tracked though.
DeleteYou entering some stuff in the painting comp this year?
I really like it, the contrast on the horse is great
ReplyDeleteNot sure whether you're going for a horse or a mutant-riding-beast here.
ReplyDeleteIf going for a horse, one thing that helps make them stand out is by giving them "socks." Adds visual interest. Can be easily done with an airbrush.
If you're going for a mutant, I'd say make him pale and fleshy.
Another thing I would say is that for me, and I'm slightly color-blind so take with a grain of salt, but for me, the horse and the base aren't different enough.
I will look at adding socks. I think that is a good recommendation. The flesh washed horse (as in the photo) is closer in color to the base than the dark sepia washed horse, which appears a bit more grey. The bases are all made, so they are what I have at the moment. One option would be for me to clean off a bit of the weathering powder. That will let the grey of the cement show through a bit more.
DeleteYeah, really my opinion on color and contrast really shouldn't be taken seriously. I'm regretting the comment. I'm color-blind, as I mentioned and I come up with some seriously hideous color schemes...luckily my wife is very good with color...
DeleteI think you made a good point. They would look better on different bases. You are one of the best painters I know, despite color blindness! I think your stuff is great. definitely going to give socks a try as well.
DeleteWow, thats a big compliment, thanks John!
DeleteWow the bridle on this model is just epic!
ReplyDeleteAnother word I had to look up! The headgear is an armored gas mask.
ReplyDeleteIts crazy sweet. Really excited to see this army up close!
DeleteYou could plasticard a martingale on most of the Death Rider sculpts. That could add to the impact...
ReplyDeleteBeautifully done, man! That's looking fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThough I know it's just a WIP ... it already starting to look great!
