Old Line Massacre Army List

I rarely share army lists, as I don't play that much, but after finding out that my original force did not have two troops choices due to one of them not filling the compulsory slot, I painted up a 15 man strong tactical squad. I was hoping to use my drop pod, and at least one of my contemptor dreadnoughts, but the points made it difficult. What you see here is a a mish mash of what I have painted that happen to fit into the points allotment.

So I wouldn't mind if one of you kind internet gamer folks, reviewed my list and offered suggestions. I have a lighting, a drop pot and two contemptors armed with close combat weapons and either lascannons or auto cannons. I could also add a single duel lightning claw terminator. A basilisk could be added if I start painting it when I get home from work tomorrow, but that may be a stretch since I am still pinning the tac squad to their bases.

I added the obligatory unfinished unit shot that accompanies every tournament I attend. I had less to paint this year than for NOVA last year, but it was still a sprint to get 16 marines painted in time.

  1. I can't really help you with the list...but good god are you a fast painter. I guess marines are like that. I've been painting about 15 dark eldar warriors and it is quite a slog. They are fair bit more detailed than marines, but still...how do you work so fast? Do you paint in sub-assemblies?

    1. I paint the heads, shoulder pads, and guns separately. I lucked out by having the bases already completed. I have the Sons of Horus armor down pat, but I still struggle with the black/dark treys and blotters for some reason. I just can't figure out how to make blotters look good. On these I tried a custom oil wash that did some weird things to the paint. I am beginning to think that pigments are way to go. Paint the whole bolter with graphite and then just rub and buff it.

    2. hurrah for spell check. Space Marines wielding their holy blotters, viscously tabulating accruals. Oh wait....bolters...

    3. Interesting. So you basically airbrush everything, then use oil washes and done?
So whats the ratio of time spent with the airbrush to the time spent with a traditional brush?

    4. My time is spent 50/50. The last 50% of the time is spent on 10% of the model. I airbrush, using templates and masking, and then use brushes to paint on the oils. With the exception of the blotters here, I don't douse a model in oil. I carefully let it run into the crevices, and then wait for it to dry a bit. Once it is a bit tacky I use a brush and thinner to blend in the oil to the surrounding areas. For important models I use a brush to blend in extreme highlights, but for this size squad I did not have the time. Most of the other stuff like faces, gems, screens, etc are just painted by hand.

    5. Just amazing how you bust these out so fast and they look great. Seriously I need to get into oil paints...though worried about toxic stuff in the house. What thinner do you use? and where do you get oik washes?

    6. I use artist oil paints left over from when I painted abstract art, as well as a whole slew of ak-interactive pre made oil washes.

    7. A true artist and a wonderful approach from a very different perspective.
An eye opener for myself. I can appreciate the different challenges you take on when using oil paints, props to you, bro.
I personally stick to citadel but I would like to try and dabble in an oil method such as yourself one day.
Inspired to collect heresy now also ;p lol

  2. Just found your blog via a post by Dave Taylor. I'm sure the answer to this question is somewhere in here but...
