Guilliman's Face

I love painting faces, but Guilliman's face is moulded in a really weird way. I'm just not sure I like the design. At any rate, I painted up a test of the face to see if I needed it to make the model work, of if the helmeted version would work better. I'm still no the fence. If I go with the face, I'll smooth out the blending a bit on the jowl lines, and rework the chin area. Does the face work at all?

  1. I think you've done a nice job on it, but i have to agree, Guilliman does look like he's sucking on a sour sweet!!

But I HATE painting faces with a pasion, so the helmet option would've been an auto-select for me!

  2. There's nothing wrong with your paint job, but I think the helmeted version would be better. He looks a bit like Kenneth Williams from the Carry On films - like I said though, definitely not a reflection on your brush work.

  3. Your paintological acumen is great. But he's just not pretty, is he ?

    1. No he is not! His chin looks like a scrotum. How did GW get this so wrong?

  4. I'd say your painting is bang-on, there's just something off with the sculpt. Strikes me as just-slightly off scale with the body and as mentioned above it looks like he just ate a lemon. That said, you've done a great job with it!

I'm a bigger fan of the helmed head, both in general and specifically with your paint scheme. Of course, with the magic of magnets you can have either depending on how the mood takes ya!

Spectacular work, man - I really dig what you've done with good ol' Rowboat!

  5. Maybe the Emperor just slipped a lil while sculpting his face?

    1. Does this explain why nobody loves Guilliman on all the forums? He's got a "face only a mother could love" and no mother ...

  6. Paint looks well but the sculpt is not the best work sadly. I would go with the helmet or an alternative head.

  7. I agree with Frothing Muppet: there's something a little off with his expression. I think if you edge in his lower lip, that'll break up the odd, forgot-my-dentures face he's making. I think this, or something along those lines is a must.

Is there a scar underneath his left eye, or is it a trick of the camera? There's an asymmetry about the size of his two eyes in these images: I think it's less key than his mouth.

Otherwise, I think this looks great.

  8. I haven't seen his face in person, but I don't think it's that bad. He looks like a douchebag, and that's how I imagine the Ultramarines.

But as for the paint job, it looks good, but I'm not here to compliment, I'm here to challenge you! The face needs more color. Choose some colors and work them in there. I'm talking yellows, purples, reds, greens...ok maybe not green. Blues tho.

    1. I appreciate the challenge. I'm really not sure where to go with this. I find the face really confusing. People don't have huge eye to chin vents along their noses, yet this model does. I'll do some touch ups and add some color.

    2. Yes, there is a scar under his eye. I didn't spend much time on it. His eye are a little uneven, but one of them is open more than the other. I can fix that pretty easily. Still, his face is weird. For possibly the most important model in their range, they really messed this one up. If I had the FW model I would do a head swap. That head is normal.
