Royal Tiger Bolt Action 1/72

I've been experimenting with camouflage for a while now, however I've been posting the results of that work. The Royal Tiger here (using the terminology from "Tigers In The Mud") was my attempt at German three color camouflage from the western front. This color scheme was produced using poster tack to mask off areas of the tank. The tracks are not complete yet, nor have the oil stains been added, but I think this guy could show up in a game and nobody would complain.

I warned you with rant brackets so here goes... This model came with vinyl tracks. The directions said that a heated screwdriver should be used to melt each track into a single piece. That worked exceedingly poorly for me. Everything about working with these vinyl tracks was awful, and the huge mess I made on them means that I have to put way more mud on the tracks than I normally would want to.

Just say no to vinyl.

  1. That is a lovely Jagtiger. I have wanted to read Tigers in the Mud for a long time so it is interesting to note they call them Royal Tigers, which I always thought applied to the Tiger 2.

    1. It is a very interesting read, but there are some very difficult sections. Some of it repellent.

  2. Lookin' great!

Can we talk about the material these 1/72 minis are made out of, though? I'm already sick to death of prepping these minis. I HATE this stuff. It's worse than early restic.

    1. The soft plastic is awful. So are these weird vinyl tracks. Plastic soldier company does hard plastic, which is the same material used by other wargames miniatures. There are a couple of other manufacturers who use hard plastic. I think valiant is one of them. I plan on picking up some AB metal troops at cold wars.

    2. I hate this material so much. I don't care what is and isn't available in 1/72; this scale is dead to me.

    3. 1/72 has a lot of different materials. You just bought a material that sucks. I agree with you about it. That's why I don't buy it. Vinyl tracks are a problem at most scales apparently. It seems to be a scale model issue.

    4. I should add that there is so much variety in 1/72 that I find it hard to figure out which kits I can trust. For vehicles the dragon ones have been superb and would make excellent display models. The PSC ones are regular war gaming models. Armourfast makes very inexpensive war gaming models with almost no detail. They take seconds to build though.
