Ancient Imperial Guard Griffon Mortar Reborn

I think this model came out in mid nineties, and it has been in my collection for at least twenty years. This model is old. It is so old that the tracks still have road wheels hidden away out of sight. Somehow after all these years, this old AFV called to me. In this third incarnation the tank is painted to match my DKoK force. At least that is what I had intended. I should have looked at my DKoK before painting, as I exaggerated the modulation a bit much here. But no matter that, I'm happy this old mortar tractor is back in business. It can now sit on my shelf. Again.

Since I don't play 40k these days, but plan to do so when the new edition drops, does this model even exist in current 40k? If there is at least an existing model there might be some hope of there being rules for it. If I can't find rules, I can always pop the mortar out, and use the vehicle as an open topped Ogryn transport or something.

  1. Looks fantastic!

As far as using it, I think you can kill two birds with one stone. If it doesn't have rules, and if you think 28mm tanks are out-of-scale for a 6'x4' table (I'm just slipping that in there), then you can easily justify using it in a game where it serves as the objective. Have the scenario use the mortar as an active model, firing at a target off-table. Track the damage to the target, while the opposition are racing to destroy the mortar, before the target is destroyed. A great narrative foundation, matched against a straightforward scenario. And we know you love blowing up stuff off-table!......

    1. That is a very good point. All of my Death Korps stuff is silly at 28mm. I have a dozen fixed guns that require tractors to move them around the table. Every game is essentially a fire base being overrun! I suppose the Death Riders are less silly in that regard, though they are riding augmented horses.

  2. I actually really like the dazzle dazzle modulation for a vintage piece like this, it's kinda cool that it stands apart a bit. You could always chuck a filter over it to bring it back a bit but like I said, I'm into it!

Not sure about rules, could be a big shake up with 40k in the next edition seeing the way formations are being pushed and rules streamlined more. You and the DKoK could find yourself back in 30k as Cults and Militia.

  3. I agree with Scorps, this looks great!

I've always been impressed by your panels and modulation on vehicles - would you consider a step by step tutorial sometime??

    1. Sure. I have some fairly unpolished tutorials that I did for the NOVA Open Charitable Foundation. I'll dig around and produce one. The Medusa is next in line though, and it lacks starting photos.

  5. Of course it's current ! It's in the soft cover 2004 IA update. I'm not sure if it's kosher for a DKK army however; I'd argue that the griffin is absolutely in keeping with the ethos and aesthetic of an Assault Brigade.

obtw, I do like the model.

  6. I really like that model but have never owned one. I've "settled" with the Vanaheim pattern instead.

  7. I believe that the new 8 addition Imperial Armor book has rules for several of the forge world models.
-This model is outstanding. Very inspirational for us die hard IG players.
