Death Korps of Krieg Test Mini

I spent the morning washing my DKOK army, hopefully removing any mold release that may have been left on the models post casting. If you do not wash your minis before you paint them, I urge you to start doing so. Before I learned the trick I ruined an Inquisitional Rhino with those cool forge world doors. Mid-way through painting the paint rubbed off the doors. The model is still awaiting a bath in green stuff nearly a year on out.

I could not resist a quick paint job, and grabbed one of the grenadier melta-gunners to see how washes would look on him.

I am not sure about the paint job. I was planning on making the DKOK mint colored like my valdor, but right now I am not sure. Should I commit to this paint job?

  1. I like the scheme, its very Steel Legion!

I would suggest an extra layer of highlights to the weapon and greatcoat to calm down those washes a bit. They're quite strong at the moment!

  2. I am envious! That is an awesome paint job. COMMIT!

  3. I love the scheme mate! its absolutely in line with how i imagined steel legion troops. Everything but the white front on the mask. I just looks to me completely out of order.

It looks way to new. You need to give it some weathering i think. maybe try with some black/brown ink then drybrush it with some white? Anyway, i might be wrong.

  4. I think it looks fantastic - I've got a Krieg army as a long-term project, and I'd love to see details on this paint scheme. Did you do the whole model with washes?

  5. I like the coat in the places where the wash is spread out and did not pool up as much or as bad.
In those spots, it looks amazing.

Get that sorted out and I think he's great looking.

  6. Man that looks great. Not only is the coat incredible, but the black - using washes to paint a black, which is normally hard to highlight well, this really does an excellent job of it.

  7. It looks pretty good. Have you seen Nik's Deathguard blog. He painted his brown with a wash heavy style.

  8. It might just be the pics but it looks like theres a bit of pooling on the greatcoat. A few thinner washes, or just pulling some of the washes from where it pools would sort that. Otherwise he looks great. I really like your mint green colour scheme though, because its 1) great and 2) looks different to every other DKOK scheme.

  9. I am going to try a mint green death corps test mini today. The pooling got away from me. basically these minis need constant attention while washes are drying. I cheated a bit and used a hair dryer for the last few tone-down washes.

Since I could not make up my mind on the DKOK I painted the Tyrant of Badab and a squad of Iron Armor honor guard. Epic fail! Some times painting mojo just fails. :)

  10. Can't wait to see the minty fresh scheme test. I never paint my commanders first no matter how tempting! I think your being harsh on yourself on those astral claws, the gold details are superb and two coats of thinned down codex/astronomican grey (1:1:2 thinner:water:paint) over the armour plates inside your final highlight should clean up the washes and still leave you with nice shading.

  11. I love the coat, care to explain how you accomplished that color and effect?

  12. Love the color you have achieved!
I would guess its a couple coats of devlan, one coat of sepia and maybe some badab black??
