Guilliman As Done As He Is Going To Be

I'm calling him done at this point. I added some more color to his face, and toned down the extremely exaggerated sculpt a bit by artificially shallowing the crevices on it. I'd like to try to get some better photos, but I am really struggling to get them to come out these days.

I really appreciate all the helpful feedback. I tried to use a lot of it. The power glove should be a lighter color to add another spot focus, but in the end I just needed this guy to be finished and take his place in my cabinet.

Do I like my rendition of him? I'm not sure. He doesn't fit my style really well. I suspect that if you lined up all my stuff and put him in the mix that you might not pick him out as having even been painted by me. I can't tell if that is color choice, skill, or just the basic model itself. Something is off. I'll revisit him at some point and try to figure out what it is.

  1. I really think that sword should have some OSL flames on it 8) haha .. (bringing back the debate) I think he came out looking good!.. are you happier with the looks sans flames? Maybe add a little scrub to the base to break up the stones? I think that could add a lot of interest even with a little in the cracked areas.

    1. I love the sword without the flames. It is my favorite part of the model. Scrub is a good idea.

  2. I think it's the level of detail on the sculpt that is killing it. Hard to pick any one thing out because of it. That is a tough nut to crack because if you push the contrast more he will look cartoony. I felt very meh about his release and thought it was just a smurf reaction, but now I can pin it down to the sculpt. Too ornate and busy. I think you did a great job with him, but he just fights your style so much. Definitely worth coming back to after a bit ;)

  3. I think it's a flipping brilliant rendition, great weathering and base, maybe some scrub would be a good idea, burnt or dry grass perhaps? Love it

  4. Switch back to the helmet, add something to the base to break up the block colour and you are sorted.

  5. Not sure if it was different lighting, or something else going on with the camera, but to mye tired old eyes, the helmeted version looks a different model to the unhelmeted vesion, for the better I'll add. The tonal quality of the model overall in the helmeted picture, together with the weathering appearing more muted, and the helemt adding a surprising focii (something missing on the GW version where they made the helmet blue), really help sell that version.

I think he's come out great, but do think the model itself is to blame for the funny vibes. I have the FW version and while it also has lots of bling, its not as distracting as the swirly gear on the GW version.

  6. Lovely work, man - Really enjoyed seeing him come together. I think the sculpt is just a little wonky and as such it looks a little odd. You've done a cracking job on it!

  7. I think he looks pretty good. The tones look a bit muted, which actually works in your advantage as the sculpt is a bit overblown!

You'll probably be happier if you stick him on the shelf for a while and then come back later. You're just too close to the project at the moment.

  8. oh man thats a sweet paint job. I kept trying to zoom in on the pictures. The 5 O'clock shadow makes him look like a proper bloke.

    1. Thank you very much. I guess I should probably take some photos with the model in focus now! :)

    1. airbrush starting with black + kantor blue (whatever the dark one is) and then moving up to calgar blue. At the end I mixed in the gw light grey color for final highlights.
