Filigree Gone Wild: Primarch WIP #2

With oils cleaned up, I blasted the model with ultra-matte varnish and began working on highlighting the gold. There is a vast amount of work to do on it, but even in this mid-way state, I think the model is coming together. I'm going to add some greens to the shadow areas of the gold which should provide some further depth, but for now I am satisfied with the progress.

The plastic base that comes with the model is too busy.  I could base him like my old Ultras, but I think I'm going to base him similar to my SoH. That means tossing the plastic base, and putting him on a dirty rock/cement outcrop. The only thing stopping me at the moment is the cool eagle head rubble piece that comes on the plastic base. I think that might look nice integrated into the replacement. Does anyone like the plastic base this guy comes with?

  1. I think your choice of going for a less 'busy' base will offset the filigree somewhat.

    1. I'm hoping that helps. I also plan to airbrush a layer of dust on his legs to drown out some of it.

  2. I'am planning the same as you do with taking the eagle head and maybe the dead csm on a new base. The one in the box is way to busy whith details for me.
I like your toned down paintjob very much.

Which head will you use? I go for the helmet painted in white.

    1. Thanks, I think great minds think alike! I'm going to paint both heads. The helmeted head will be white like yours.

  3. Looking good so far John. I think careful application of wear and weathering around the model might help pull attention back up to the face. With so much gold, it is definitely a busy (but beautifully rendered) work in progress!

    1. I think you are right. I might try using some transparent paints to tint some areas darker. The gold is a problem though. There is just so much of it, it almost makes more sense painting the gold first and the blue afterwards.

  4. Nice, don't forget purple will work nice for gold too!
