Fall-In Table Shots

Fall-In was incredible this past weekend. I had the most fun I have had at a convention so far. The variety and quality of games was just incredible. I saw ancients, Epic 40K, 40K, Bolt Action, Star Wars, Civil War, Napoleonics,Frostgrave, Flames of War, Chain of Command, Fireball Forward, ww1/ww2 aircraft games, weird ww2, Fantasy, and more. That list doesn't come close to the true number of game systems represented, but it provides a sense of what is available. I like Fall-In more than Historicon, despite it being smaller. There is something really nice about the more intimate space.

One of the more exciting things to see what the Battle of Sollum game our club brought up to Fall-In. Cheatin Steve ran the games and received great feedback. We learned a lot about table judging at Fall-In as well. Tables need to not have seams, and need to have clean edges. The houses were also not blended into the table. On the other hand, we had loads of people wandering over to take photos of the board.

While walking around an event like this, I kept thinking about the disparity in quality between the 40k tables and almost everything else. From the photos above, you can see that I did not take any photos of the 40k stuff. There just wasn't a need to. The big game I watched looked fun, and the players were clearly having a great time, but so much stuff was only partially painted, and the battlefield was underwhelming. I really wish the 40k community as a whole would embrace a higher quality table style. Everything is better on a nice table. Now I need to figure out what to do about my epic 40k table.

  2. John I love all these photos, thanks for sharing! I agree totally with the 40k terrain, I am spending this winter building some proper scenery to game over rather than dive into the battle if Calth. I feel all my 40k games will be far more enjoyable and memorable rather than just quickly painting up the latest release. Here's to taking the long view!

    1. Hopefully there will be more photos of Fall-In tables out there. I stopped taking photos when my iPhone started crashing after every one I took.

I think you are on the right path Matthew. A beautiful battlefield determines the available tactics. Warhammer 40k is such a rich setting, that it should be easy to come up with a lived in looking table.

  4. I was sad about missing it before but now I'm totally upset haha. Those tables look awesome. Yeah I've heard those guys are super picky. That's why I'm trying to design up some cool 40k terrain. 8)

    1. There is a full range players at HMGS events. There were plenty of folks playing fantasy games, and science fiction games, so I think you'd be fine. Don't let the reputation keep you away from a great event. The biggest problem is likely the number of scales being played. 6mm, 1/100, 1/72, 28mm, 1/35, 1/200 etc
