Ultramarines Movie Review: It is terrible!

My copy of the Ultramarines DVD came in yesterday, and I promptly watched it as all fans of the genre are likely to do. The short answer is that this is a flat out terrible movie. The story is bland, the animation terrible, and the direction simply unbelievable. The marines move like toys, behave like amateur soldiers, and apparently allow enlisted to challenge officers orders. My wife offered to watch the movie with me, but had to go to an event. I thought the chance to share my hobby with her was such a cool opportunity. However after watching the movie, I will not sit through it again. I would not show this movie to anyone. It is such a shame since they have a normally good writer, and an excellent voice cast. Send this movie to /dev/null and forget about it!

  3. Yeah, it was pretty bad; the animation completely failed to sell the idea of power armor, facial animation was so bad they kept cutting away from it, camera movement was synthetic, bland voice acting (wasted talent), complete absence of battlefield situational awareness or tactics, no suspense or 'war is hell' feeling, pointless armor, bad sound etc. Overall it does a disservice to the brand and I wish it never existed.

  4. That's a bummer, I wasn't holding out much hope at all, but something better than this...

  5. I disagree entirely. I felt the movie was spectacular.

Thus far you are the only person I've encountered that has a negative opinion of the movie.

  6. I set a pretty low bar for my expectations, after all I've read almost every black library 40k novel without regard to quality. This movie was just so terrible I hope they don't make more like it. I wish I did not feel this way. I think the post by Anonymous is spot on. This movie is harmful to the brand. The facial animation was wooden, and the tactics use by the ultramarines seemed childish. I think the rated R does nothing for the movie, because it sets an expectation that it is an adult movie, but then the animation and blocking is so childish it rings hollow.

I am glad you enjoyed it Oni, and wish I had as well.

  8. I like it.

Sure, it can be improved. I'm hoping they do, in fact, make more and better.

I'm OK with it not being all fluff. If I wanted fluff, I'd read a book, instead of watching a 70 min cartoon.
