Praetorian Guard WIP

With the color scheme set, I soldiered forth with the rest of the army in a batch painting fashion. I'm very rusty, but I'm having a blast painting these guys. I thought the commissar was the commander, so I painted him up really un-commissary...er un-murder-deathy.

Now the big question becomes whether I can accumulate enough to field these guys in an actual force. I think I can scrape together two infantry squads, a command squad, and maybe two weapon team squads. Is that enough? I have no idea how Guard work in 9th, or how an army is even put together. What I do know is that these guys need a single suitable FW ww1 styled tank to accompany them. Which variant should I pick? I guess the easy path is the pick the most WW1 looking tank possible.

  1. Just straight up get some tanks from Trenchworx and convert the weapons.

  2. FW Macharius tanks would work and are available in your Heavy Support slots (unlike most other FW offerings).

2 infantry squads would let you run a patrol detachment. You could then have 2 heavy weapon squads (or 2 tanks) as Heavy Support options.

If you could move some of the heavy weapon squad models into the infantry squads (possibly combined with command squads, which you don't have to take), you might have 3 infantry squads, which would give you a Battalion detachment, which could take more tanks as heavy support.

    1. This is really helpful I appreciate the assistance. I may be able to swing two squads by moving a heavy and a special weapon into each squad. The Macharious is a really cool tank, and I already have one built and painted as well, and in desert colors no less! All I would need to do is remove the DKoK crew.

    3. The malcador looks perfect for these guys. I have one painted in British ww2 colors that would work as well. My tanks finally have homes.

  3. Not trying to teach you to suck eggs, Mr S, but you've looked at all of the Victoria Lamb/Anvil preatorians ?

Just enjoying the idea of you doing a VL Preatorian firing line...

  4. I’m on a nostalgia kick at the moment, but you are right Victoria’s miniatures are less expensive and much better quality. I may add some rough riders using her models in the future.
