HOW TO:Ruined City Basing 40k

I am busy building and basing an imperial guard army. Since I am combining Cadians, Steel Legion, Vostroyan, and original guard models, I need a strong base design to pull them all together.

1. cut rubble bits and glue them to your bases. I used grid pattern plastic card to produce tiles, as well as old tank bits, and sprues.
2. prime black
3. dry brush with a mixture of black and bleached bone (or the foundation paint closest to it) The idea is to make a dirty grey rather than a white/black grey.
4. Dry brush with a very light amount of bleached bone or the foundation of your choice. Try not to over do it. I use a bleached bone/Deheneb stone mixture.
5. Use a heavy wash of devlan mud. These new washes are awesome!
6. Once dry create your own wash using blazing orange. I use a Tamaya acrylic paint thinner x-20A. The idea is to have a very diluted wash. Paint this carefully onto mechanical bits or along sprue pieces. This will look like rust when dry. I use a lot of broken gears on my bases, so this really pulls them out of the muddy/grey backdrop.

Welcome to my 40k hobby blog. I have been a 40k player, and now mostly painter since rogue trader came out! There was a brief 10 year span where I hid my 40k minis away in storage boxes and did not pick up a brush. However a year ago after reading my first Horus heresy book from the Black Library, I was hooked again. I am primarily focussed on painting and converting now, and got tired of having to switch between The Bolter and Chain Sword or the Imperial Guard message board to show my work. I plan to make this place the single source for all of my armies, painting tips etc. I may not be the best painter, but I am very fast, and have a pretty good time experimenting with it. The banner on the left is the 4th company banner for my custom chapter, the Iron Scythes. I will post their IA, as well as a boat load of images over my next few posts.
