Epic Scale World Eaters

Continuing my trek in to all things Epic, I have painted the first part of my World Eaters legion force. I have so much epic in the painting queue that I had to just dive right in and get painting. This time around I did not bother to do panel shading on the models. (If you look at the thunderhawk below this post you can see what panel shading looks like if you don't already know) The question is whether it is as effective. I think the force looks good, but maybe it lacks the same depth as the Sons of Horus force. On the other hand, I takes so much less time to paint that I was able to get all of these done in a single evening.

Sons of Horus Thunderhawk Epic Scale

Epic 30k has really caught my imagination. It is played at a scale where Thunderhawks and super heavy tanks make sense. Naturally, I had to have a flight of Thunderhawks. Yep, you heard that right. I have a full 8 of these guys to paint. They are split evenly between transporters carrying rhinos, and the traditional gunship model pictured here. I plan to paint at least two different legions, possibly four, in order to play Istavaan III, so quite a few were needed. When they aren't being used for Epic, or Aeronautica Imperialis (think X-Wing but 40k), they will sit on the shelf fueling my imagination.

On The Painting Table: Lightenings, Marauders, and One Tiny Thunderhawk

Rejuvenated post Fall-In, I jumped back into painting Epic 40K models. I am really happy to have found a thunderhawk to add to my Sons of Horus force. It is still glossy from the varnish, but I think it will look the part once it is one the table with my marines. The Marauders and Lightenings are for the Imperial Guard force, which will be run as a local PDF force. I am planning a narrative game that will let us play the first betrayal, where the legions purged their ranks.

Fall-In Table Shots

Fall-In was incredible this past weekend. I had the most fun I have had at a convention so far. The variety and quality of games was just incredible. I saw ancients, Epic 40K, 40K, Bolt Action, Star Wars, Civil War, Napoleonics,Frostgrave, Flames of War, Chain of Command, Fireball Forward, ww1/ww2 aircraft games, weird ww2, Fantasy, and more. That list doesn't come close to the true number of game systems represented, but it provides a sense of what is available. I like Fall-In more than Historicon, despite it being smaller. There is something really nice about the more intimate space.

One of the more exciting things to see what the Battle of Sollum game our club brought up to Fall-In. Cheatin Steve ran the games and received great feedback. We learned a lot about table judging at Fall-In as well. Tables need to not have seams, and need to have clean edges. The houses were also not blended into the table. On the other hand, we had loads of people wandering over to take photos of the board.

While walking around an event like this, I kept thinking about the disparity in quality between the 40k tables and almost everything else. From the photos above, you can see that I did not take any photos of the 40k stuff. There just wasn't a need to. The big game I watched looked fun, and the players were clearly having a great time, but so much stuff was only partially painted, and the battlefield was underwhelming. I really wish the 40k community as a whole would embrace a higher quality table style. Everything is better on a nice table. Now I need to figure out what to do about my epic 40k table.
